I will be buying a new phone soon (the old employer's BlackBerry is going away) and have been looking at getting an iPhone. I am a notorious hardware holdout, rather than an edge cutter (I like the 2 gens ago chips, they are fast *and* cheap - still typing this on a MacBook core duo I got a few years back, still works fine). That, combined with the fact that the company decided for me in the past, is the reason I don't have an iPhone already.
Yet, the time has come for me to get a new personal/work mobile phone. So, I put the question to the current iPhone owners that frequent the TotSP bitwaves, how's your iPhone treating you - still think it's the greatest thing since your first beeper?
I was a bit dismayed originally by the lack of third party app support - but that's resolved now (though it will take some time for apps to trickle into actual usage). I was also concerned about not having a GPS - despite what a lot folks say that will do to battery life (the GPS on my BlackBerry is one of the most used features, frankly), and it looks like that may get resolved in June with a new 3G/GPS iPhone too.
Other than those concerns, how do the rest of your experiences with it stack up. How does it work as a phone in real life? How handy is the WIFI (the EDGE crap on the BlackBerry drives me nuts)? How has your "service" been with AT&T (I have them now, so no surprises for me, just curious what iPhoners think).
I will likely wait at least to find out what happens in June, would be great to get the 3G/GPS one if it drops - but my choice is still $400 bucks or so for iPhone vs free for just about any other device in the AT&T store at the same 2yr contract lock (I have had Cingular/AT&T for 6 years or so, so as much as I despise the contract thing, it works for me because I will likely have them for another 2 years anyway, and it gets me free/reduced hardware other than the iPhone).
What to do, keep taking the free (as in contract free) junk, or grow up and get an iPhone?

my iPhone
I like my iPhone...a lot. AT&T has been a non-issue for me...I'm in the Denver area and don't travel much anymore so coverage is good. I REALLY like having wifi on it, the browsing experience isn't that great over EDGE. I too, was concerned about GPS as I really like that, but I got over it quickly. It's become my all purpose computer...I check my email, do quick surfs on the web, listen to music, store my contacts and oh, yea, it's a phone too. I mainly like it because it's replaced my phone/iPod combo and unlike a lot of phones I've had, I can see that my contacts & schedule are sync'd somewhere. I'm anxious to see the 3G this summer, if I was you, I'd wait. My brother has a BlackJack and it's okay...but nothing like the iPhone. My true wants for the thing is that the camera would improve so I didn't have to think about a seperate camera, I'd love to be able to slide in a mini-SD card or something and I'd love an external keyboard ala my old Newton.
Anxiously waiting for the old fashioned book to ship from Amazon....if it's as good as I think it'll be, I'll slap a 5 star rating there for sure!
Still holding out for the 2nd
Still holding out for the 2nd generation.
Put me in the still holding out for v2 category as well
I have a BlackJack II currently, but will think hard about switching if all the June feature rumors come true. Lately though I'm hearing lots of second hand negatives. Talking to people who don't have one saying everyone they know is unhappy with theirs. Which doesn't really jive with the few people I know who own one who love it. Go figure.
I don't know anyone who
I don't know anyone who doesn't love theirs.
One more iPhone question
Thanks to all that commented here. What I am hearing is sort of what I expected, I have heard some nay-sayers - but they are generally friend who has one hates it (exactly as Schmooze states, "second hand negatives").
I was hoping that JeepMutt would chime in here too. He was an early iPhone adopter, and is not otherwise and Apple guy (not already biased, and not shy about sharing his opinion).
If the features they are talking about do drop (gotta have GPS man), I will likely get one, even at flipping 400-500 bucks, which is way more than I would typically spend on a phone (the CrackBerry has me addicted to getting my email on the phone, and even though I hate Opera Mini and the RIM browser for web surfing over EDGE, and that translated not the real site crap, it's still sometimes handy, so I don't think I can walk away from a mobile computer type phone - and if I can get one that's also a good video iPod and has WiFi, well, I suppose that justifies the price).
One other question, can I use the damn thing for DATA transfer? Meaning can I use it like my Shuffle and Nano let me do, setup part of the partition as data and transfer files? I hear tell the Touch disallows that, which seems insane, does the iPhone suffer the same stupidity?
Did you buy it already?
Seems the online retailers are sold out right now due to Apple draining the supply chain w/ the rumored release of the Gen 2 phones being announced next month.

iphone: saw that too
I haven't bought one no, just waiting. The current sold out status bodes well for the June launch of rev 2 though - so I am right on schedule ;).
