The Mac MINI is here! and new iPod Shuffle

Really cool,..check it out Mac Mini. I am really glad to see this is out and it looks great. It is only 6.5 inches square, 2 inches tall and 2.9 pounds.

The new iPod shuffle is nice also,..less the one ounce and starts at $99. Apple actually making really decent prices on their stuff these days. Even the xserve is a great price for what you are getting. Only thing I see a bit over priced seems to be the Powerbook (though I still own one).

RE: The Mac MINI is here! and new iPod Shuffle

You got to the post before me. This think is COOL AS HELL. One of the best ideas in computing in a long time. One of the best looking machines ever.

This was a very smart move by Apple, and new IPods to compete with all the other flavors of small models, brilliant.

Note the mini has bluetooth and airport (capable) so you could have wireless keyboard and your mini and walk around the house, office, both, wherever and just plugin power and monitor (and it goes to TV very easily if you need to surf in the kitchen, etc).

Just awesome stuff. Still a bit pricey when you add in all thats needed but not overpriced, just not as cheap as they are making it out (add a monitor keyboard mouse memory airport, etc and you are over a grand).

I cant seem to price one, keep getting all kinds of timeouts on the apple store. Sure sure sure its busy as hell right after they announce this shit but come on cant the company that MAKES the fancy dancy Xserve G5 things have a cluster of them that supports whatever demand. Geeze.

I will just get a Dell with XP (also $499) ;).

RE: The Mac MINI is here! and new iPod Shuffle

Ok guys - my question is how much memory do you really need to run on an Apple. All my XP machines are at a gig now - 256 seems so last century. Is that really enough? Figure the box will do light photoshop stuff - just enough to manipulate images with my D70. What the least I should have?

RE: The Mac MINI is here! and new iPod Shuffle

512 works well for me. I do some photoshop rendering and then the basics. Of course I probably would notice a difference with a gig but not enough to make me spend the money. Looks like it is only $75 more to up the min to 512,...actually I added bluetooth, airport, wireless keyboard and mouse, the 80 gb harddrive and upped the memory and it prices for $852. Hook that up to the tv and stereoo and I will be in good shape.

RE: The Mac MINI is here! and new iPod Shuffle

Yeah - that's exactly what I'm gonna do. Except I don't need airport and I'll probably stay at 40 gig and store eveything on my server. That still puts me at $723. Not exactly cheap, but what the hell.

RE: The Mac MINI is here! and new iPod Shuffle

I customized mine as well.

As for memory I went with 512, it would be nice to have more but 512 is indeed enough (I run two old iMac DVs with 256 and they work fine, mostly kids games, Office, Internet, etc, no Photoshop or anything, but they run OS X fine.) It costs 75 bucks to go to 512 yet it costs 425 to go to 1GB? Geeze, quite a jump eh. (Sure its a single DIMM but 425 bucks?)

I also went with the 80GB drive. I did not plan to as I wont need that much but its only 50 bucks more.

I added a SuperDrive (gotta be able to burn to backup iTunes and whatever else).

I did not add anything else, no Keyboard, no wireless (Bluetooth or Airport, they can be added later).

I came out to $724.

(Note I did not make the purchase yet, just went back to the store today because I could not get it to work yesterday, This is cool as heck and all but for 724 bucks I might peruse eBay for some used iBook or iMac models, hell a new eMac is 799 - sans SuperDrive and such.)
