KnoppMyth to simplify your MythTV PVR

Newsforge has an article entitled Simple PVR with KnoppMyth which provides an overview of what KnoppMyth is and why it may be better for some users than roll your own style MythTV.

Sometime back I started a Myth project (even wrote an article here saying I was finally just going to do it), but must admit I havent had time to get very far. I did dedicate some hardware but have not really gone and spent the cash to get the rest of the components I wanted. I basically never started the software setup, not because of the intimidation factor the aforementioned article intimates but rather just lack of time (and or sheer laziness ;)).

I would still like to build a PVR using Linux and Myth-Freevo, just for the experience, but at present I do now own a Tivo so the need for my own "home brew" PVR is just not up there. And the Tivo (DirecTV Tivo - very nice - but supposedly going away in 2007 when DirecTV starts shipping their own DVR - something the News Corp. purchase of DirecTV a few years back supposedly inspired since News already has cable cos with their own DVRs) works very well and was dirt cheap at $99 bucks (and with DirecTV its only $4.99 a month for the Tivo fee).

At any rate, for those interested KnoppMyth is a wrapper around Knoppix and MythTV that aims to make the install "as trivial as possible".

RE: KnoppMyth to simplify your MythTV PVR

"a wrapper around Knoppix and MythTV"... Wrong, KnoppMyth started as a remaster of Knoppix. We stripped out what wasn't needed and add what was to get a PVR up and running. At the time this was written, KnoppMyth was/is built from scratch.

RE: KnoppMyth to simplify your MythTV PVR

And "remaster of Knoppix" is different than "wrapper"? Ok, so "wrapper" is possibly the wrong word, BASED on Knoppix.

It is based on Knoppix and Myth, its not a rewrite of either. Dont get me wrong, I wasnt trying to discount the effort, I recognize its a unique blending of the two, and I love the results, so my apologies, but it is something based on Knoppix, no?

RE: KnoppMyth to simplify your MythTV PVR

yes, remastering and wrapping are two mutually exclusive concepts. by remastering, he means he created a distinctly different image than the base installation. a wrapper shouldn\'t modify the base image, just the stock installation procedure.
