Corel completes its Linux bail: silicon.com

Corel has announced it will be closing its open source developer website. It has already sold off its distro and long ago given up on making money with Linux. I will admit, I thought they could make money and I bought stock. I never actually paid money for a Corel product, but I thought somebody would.

I thought a supported pretty packaged Linux desktop with a slick installer and apps to go with like Corel Office and Corel Draw could make inroads. I was wrong. The stock hasnt tanked (which is more than I can say for the rest of the stock I own) and I do still own it, but it hasnt made any money either. In fact, a Microsoft deal is why the stock, and frankly the company, is surviving.

So this Linux business venture was a big admitted flop. It will happen, this was just ahead of its time a bit, and the overall global economic downturn didnt help.
